I’ve often heard “I’ve been in a car accident, but I don’t have health insurance so I can’t get the care I need.” If you or a family member has experienced this you may want to reevaluate the situation. The State of Oregon is a no-fault state. This means that no matter who caused the accident you are entitled to receive medical care under your personal injury protection (PIP) under your auto insurance. Oregon law mandates that you and all passengers in your car have up to $15,000 in coverage to cover your medical bills. In addition, you have the right to choose your medical provider for the injury.

In general, the sooner care begins the better the prognosis (outcome). Chiropractic treatment and many other forms of physical medicine can make a big difference in recover times and avoiding long term pain. Studies have shown that a large percentage of whiplash victims will still have pain years after their crashes.

There have been several research articles indicating that bodily injury is possible at low speeds. This is why I suggest if you are in pain following a car accident that you seek professional medical attention. The muscles and ligaments supporting the neck (cervical spine) may become torn and the spinal discs may tear or bulge. In addition, delicate nerve tissue may become irritated causing numbness and/or tingling in the upper back and arms. Left untreated, the formation of scar tissue and aberrant joint motion can impair the function of the neck and back.

Here are a few signs of injury to look for following a car accident:
1. Headache
2. Neck pain
3. Back pain
4. Sciatica (pain down the leg)
5. Pain in the shoulders
6. Ringing in the ears
7. Numbness or tingling in the arms/hands
8. Memory loss
9. Poor concentration
10. Vision problems
